How do I apply Social Credits and Rewards to opportunities?

This article shows group managers how to apply social credits to opportunities. Social credits can be earned by volunteers and redeemed against rewards offered by the group.

Social credits & rewards are available only to Be Collective Pro and Full Platform subscribers. To learn more about Be Collective's subscription plans, please see Be Collective's product plans & pricing

Be Collective allows you to recognise the important contributions your volunteers make through social credits, which can be awarded with opportunities and redeemed by your volunteers in return for any rewards you choose to offer. This feature is available only to Be Collective Pro and Full Platform subscribers, as part of the Rewards and certificates module.

Activate the Rewards and certificates module

  1. Open your group management page by clicking Manage my groups in the left sidebar (or switch the Overview panel to Management and click Groups I'm managing, then select the appropriate group)

  2. Open the Modules tab

  3. Click Activate on the Rewards and certificates module (if not already activated)

  4. Click Manage to open Rewards and certificates

Create a reward

  1. Open the Rewards tab in the Rewards and certificates module

  2. Click Add to create a reward

  3. Enter the reward details:

    • Name of reward — e.g. "Cinema tickets for two", "Lunch with our CEO"
    • Description — what you're offering and how volunteers can earn it
    • Terms and Conditions — expiry dates, hours required, applicable roles
    • Credit Amount — how many credits a volunteer needs to claim the reward
    • Quantity — how many volunteers can access the reward
    • Expiry — optional time limit after which the reward disappears from public view
  4. Save the reward

Apply credits to an opportunity

  1. Create an opportunity or edit an existing opportunity

  2. On Step 1 – Details, enter the number of credits you'd like to offer for volunteering to this opportunity

  3. Save and publish the opportunity

The volunteer will only be able to claim the reward once they've earned enough credits offered by your group. Credits earned from other groups cannot be redeemed against rewards you offer.

Can I add social credits to an existing opportunity?

Social credits can be added to an existing opportunity only if no volunteers have been approved for that opportunity. Once volunteers have been approved, the social credits field is locked. This applies even if the approved volunteers have not yet been assigned to shifts or schedules.

How and when are social credits awarded to volunteers?

Volunteers receive the stipulated number of credits for each timesheet you or another manager of your group approves for their volunteering to the opportunity.

For instance, if you offer 10 credits for a shift-based opportunity and a volunteer completes three shifts, the volunteer will receive 30 credits in total – 10 for each shift. If they need to earn 50 credits for a reward, they will need to complete two more shifts, or earn 20 credits against another opportunity where you offer social credits.

If you offer 10 credits for a flexible opportunity where a volunteer is asked to contribute three hours per week, the volunteer will receive 10 credits for each week's worth of volunteering they complete.

For more information on timesheets, see How do I approve timesheets?

Is the number of credits adjusted depending on the length of shift or schedule?

No — credits are awarded to volunteers automatically upon a timesheet being approved, regardless of how many hours are in that timesheet. This means a volunteer completing a one-hour shift will receive as many credits as a volunteer completing a three-hour shift. We encourage group managers to bear this in mind when building opportunities that offer social credits.

Approve a reward redemption

If a volunteer completes enough volunteering to earn the credits required for a reward, their claim will be shown in the Redemptions tab of the Rewards and Certificates module, under Pending.

  1. Open the Redemptions tab

  2. Review the pending claim and any details the volunteer provided

  3. Click the tick box under Actions to approve the redemption

  4. Optionally include a short confirmation message (we also suggest contacting the volunteer by phone or email to arrange delivery of the reward outside Be Collective)

At any time, you can also see at a glance how many rewards you have available for volunteers, in the No. redeemed column of the Rewards table.
