Getting started as a volunteer manager

Be Collective recommends volunteer managers follow the 5 steps below to get started.

Each step links to Help Centre article(s) with detailed step-by-step instructions.

Before you start

  • You must be 18 or older to create or manage groups.
  • Enable MFA in Settings before using Manage my groups or creating a group.

Step 1 - Join Be Collective

Volunteer managers must create an individual Be Collective account first, before creating a group or posting volunteer opportunities for your organisation.

After you create an individual account, you can then create a new group for your organisation and post volunteer opportunities.

Step 2 - Create a group

In Be Collective, a group can mean a number of things, for example:

  • a non-profit or community group offering volunteer opportunities

  • a private sector business partnering with non-profit or community groups and endorsing volunteer opportunities for their employees

  • a Volunteer Resource Centre (VRC) offering advice, networking opportunities and volunteer management support to non-profit and community groups in their local area

  • a Council wanting to map the community contribution and volunteer landscape across their municipality

  • a Government department looking to link their programs and initiatives with social outcomes

  • How do I create a group?

  • How do I edit my group? – It’s important to keep your group’s profile updated. Adding details about your group and including a logo, banner, and website will attract more volunteers.

  • How do I manage my group? – As a group owner or group admin, accessing your group’s management page will allow you to do everything from creating opportunities, managing members, approving partnerships and more.

  • How do I add administrators to my group? – Giving a member of your group administration access means that they will be able to help you in managing your group along with its opportunities and members.

Step 3 – Create an opportunity

Creating a new opportunity consists of five steps, with each step covered in detail in the Help Centre articles listed below.

Step 4 - Invite members to join your group

Once a group is complete with opportunities, inviting new members to join your group will be one of the final steps you take as a group manager.

New members can include current volunteers and/or fellow staff, for example.

How can I add or invite members to my group?

Step 5 - Review volunteer applications

After volunteers apply for opportunities, you can either assign them to shifts or to a flexible opportunity.
